Vented or unvented
Many older homes with a cylinder have a vented one. It is fed by gravity from a cold water tank in the loft, so the pressure at the tap depends on how high that tank sits.
An unvented cylinder is fed straight from the mains in a sealed system. There is no loft tank, and hot water comes out at mains pressure, which is why it suits homes with more than one bathroom.
We install unvented cylinders, and we repair and upgrade hot water systems of both kinds. If you are not sure which you have, ring the office and describe the setup.
Why the installer's qualification matters
Part G3 of the Building Regulations covers unvented hot water storage over 15 litres. Only a competent person may install one, and the work is notifiable to building control.
Unvented hot water (G3) is on our Gas Safe record. Our registered business number is 525389, and you can check it yourself on the Gas Safe Register.
What changes at home
- Showers run at mains pressure, without a pump.
- Several outlets can run at once, so one bath does not stop the kitchen tap.
- The cold water tank in the loft goes, and the space comes back.
A cylinder also matters if you are thinking about a heat pump. A heat pump draws heat from the outside air into radiators, underfloor heating and a hot water cylinder, so hot water needs a cylinder rather than a combi. See air source heat pumps.
Looking after it
An unvented cylinder needs an annual check of its relief valves and expansion vessel. It can be booked with the boiler service so both are done in one visit.
Water across the Anglian Water region, which supplies every postcode we cover, is classed as hard to very hard. Scale is part of life for any hot water system here, which is another reason the yearly check is worth keeping up.

Questions about hot water cylinders
What is the difference between a vented and an unvented cylinder?
A vented cylinder is fed by gravity from a cold water tank in the loft. An unvented cylinder is fed straight from the mains in a sealed system, so there is no loft tank and the hot water comes out at mains pressure.
Why does the installer need to be G3 qualified?
Because the Building Regulations require it. Part G3 covers unvented hot water storage over 15 litres: only a competent person may install one, and the work is notifiable to building control. Unvented hot water (G3) is on our Gas Safe record.
Does an unvented cylinder need servicing?
Yes, once a year. An unvented cylinder needs an annual check of its relief valves and expansion vessel, and the check can be booked alongside the boiler service.
Will an unvented cylinder improve my shower?
Usually, yes. Hot water comes out at mains pressure rather than the pressure a loft tank can give, which is why unvented systems suit homes with more than one bathroom.
Can I get rid of the loft tank?
Yes. An unvented cylinder is fed from the mains, so the cold water tank in the loft is no longer needed and the space is freed up.
Does a heat pump need a cylinder?
Yes, if you want it to provide hot water as well as heating. A heat pump warms the water in a hot water cylinder rather than heating it on demand like a combi, so a cylinder is part of the design. Air source heat pumps has the detail.
Are you qualified for unvented cylinders?
Yes. Unvented hot water (G3) is on our Gas Safe record, and unvented cylinder installation is one of the services we list. We also repair and upgrade hot water systems.
